Before long, the entire team, minus Ben, found themselves back at the dorms. They had strapped on their shin pads, divided up into teams of three, and taken over the long hallways outside of the rooms.

Zach was on a team with Jackson and Sam. They were playing against Tyler and two guys named Carter and Alex. At first, Zach thought he would be too tired to be any good, but the soreness quickly disappeared as Jackson passed him the tennis ball. Zach slapped it back with the blade from an old wooden stick.

Jackson shot the ball toward Tyler, who kneeled in front of a mini plastic net. Tyler smacked it away.

Taking the rebound, Sam passed to Zach. Carter shuffled over and tried to get his stick around the ball, but Zach slid away. He came to the right side of the net. Tyler moved to block him, leaving the left open.

Zach saw his chance. He made a quick pass to Jackson, who shot the ball into the back of the net.

“Ugh, no!” Tyler said.

“Oh, man. Nice one,” Carter added.

“We might actually win a game or two,” Jackson said as he laughed and high-fived Sam and Zach.

Zach smiled. The hallway was crowded and loud. But for the first time at camp, he was having fun. Maybe these guys were okay after all.

“Yeah, maybe,” Zach agreed.
